Jaxyn Fetherling interned with (W) Boutique and gained experience in fashion-focused retailing.

How did you get your internship and why did you choose this experience?

For my internship, I chose to work at a local Tucson boutique, called (W) Boutique. Throughout the experience, I was given the ability to learn all the ins-and-outs of what it takes to run a clothing store ranging from sourcing, pricing, and designing the space. I learned the importance of marketing your pieces of clothing correctly, designing your space to have a nice feng shui, and the importance of customer relationships.

I got the opportunity to secure my internship through my network. I reached out to several companies and individuals that I knew had connections in the fashion industry and sent them my resume. I expressed interest in the fashion industry and asked if they had any opportunities for me as an intern. After speaking with multiple individuals, I secured my internship.

I chose this internship because I wanted to learn another perspective on the fashion industry. I had previously worked in more of the fashion editorial aspect of the field and I wanted to see what the retail experience would be like. I was looking for an internship that would give me a hands-on approach and allow me to be creative while working. I'm so glad to have had this experience.

What new skills did you develop in this internship?

I learned numerous new skills while working at the boutique. I learned and practiced the importance of customer service and customer relationships. Patience and resilience were big things I had to develop while working in customer service. Sometimes not everything will go right, and you may have some customers who do not like what you pick out for them. Being able to be patient and understanding with a customer is one thing that will lead you to success.

How has your internship experience influenced your plans for your future?

My internship experience helped to cement my love for the fashion industry and gave me the desire to continue with this career path. I have learned that I enjoy working in a team which gives me more options to look for once I reach the next steps of finding a career out of college. It has also enhanced my desire to take steps into looking at other aspects of fashion such as garment design and styling.

What advice do you have for other students as they search for their internship?

One of the biggest pieces of advice I can give is to be patient. I know when I began looking for my internship, I was very stressed about finding the perfect job. I think looking for something that might be different from what you initially wanted and looking for something that will challenge you is a great idea. Be open to numerous options instead of closing yourself off to one idea.
