Maria Torres created social media content for The American Literary Translators Association.

How did you get your internship and why did you choose this experience?

While looking for internship opportunities Stephanie Springer, the Internship Director, provided me with some options, including an advertisement about a position with The American Literary Translators Association (ALTA). After learning about their work in translation, I decided to get in contact with the supervisor. After submitting my application materials and interviewing, I was offered the position.

I choose this internship because, in addition to my Applied Humanities studies, I am pursuing a second major in Translation and Interpretation. I felt that this opportunity was the perfect combination of both fields.

What was the focus of your internship?

The main focus of my internship was to create social media content for ALTA’s social media accounts. I would do this by researching what was going on in the literary translation field - from translation events to the most recent book releases. Some of the new skills that I developed throughout this internship were how to manage different social media platforms in a professional manner, and how to create content that is engaging but at the same time maintains that professional tone (here's an example of my work). Through the research that I have been doing, I have also learned so much about what literary translation is and how it works.
