Abbie Twomey developed skills in content creation and brand strategy while managing multiple digital platforms.
Why did you choose this internship?
I chose this internship because it combined elements I was already familiar with and others that were completely new to me. My goal was to find a digital marketing internship, which is what initially drew me in. However, this role focused on digital marketing for real estate, a field I had no prior experience in, which made it both exciting and a potentially great learning opportunity. I was also drawn to the supportive and approachable nature of my boss and mentor. During my initial interview, she encouraged me to ask questions and made me feel at ease right away. Lastly, the location was in my desired area of Phoenix close to where I live, which made it an ideal fit.
What type of work did you do at your internship?
Throughout my internship, my main goal was to help the brand elevate, polish, and expand its social media presence, as well as assist with various digital marketing initiatives. I contributed to many projects, such as creating a home renovation “before and after” series, developing creative real estate market updates, and producing new listing and price reduction content. I learned how to add and update content on the website, making weekly changes to different tabs. I consistently used digital platforms such as WordPress, Later Social, and Canva. I edited custom Canva templates, creating buyer and seller guides for clients in the office. I attended open houses to capture content, participated in team meetings, and helped build and post promotional and marketing material for upcoming listings. I also gained insight into the process of preparing listings for the market, as well as assisting clients. Additionally, I researched audience trends and analytics to contribute to creative strategies, refined my content planning skills, and brainstormed ways to improve engagement. This included rebuilding and rebranding various social media platforms such as Pinterest, updating its overall look to align with the brand style, and monitoring analytics to track performance.
Was there anything particularly unique about your experience?
What made my internship role unique was that I was my supervisor’s first-ever intern. I felt honored to be the first person to take on this role, and it was exciting to try new things knowing I had such a special opportunity to work with great agents. I enjoyed bringing a fresh sense of creativity to the team while also expanding my skills. Not only did I get to work on digital marketing, but I also gained valuable insight into how the real estate industry operates and what it’s like to work in a professional environment.
As the brand’s first intern, I brought a fresh sense of creativity to the team. I introduced new approaches to content creation, refreshed the brand’s visual style across platforms, and produced engaging materials that enhanced the company’s digital presence.
What skills did you learn or get to practice?
Throughout this internship, I developed a wide range of new skills. I became proficient in navigating digital platforms and editing website content. I strengthened my abilities in social media marketing, analytics, creative content production, and template editing. I gained experience working in a professional office environment and contributing ideas during team meetings. I learned how to collaborate with other realtors while visiting houses capturing content, and I refined my skills in creating engaging real estate content across various social media platforms.
What was your favorite part of the internship?
My favorite part of this internship was the ability to freely express my creativity in the projects I worked on and developed. While the content I created was tailored to a specific brand and niche, I was still able to incorporate my own creative perspective, which I greatly appreciated. I also valued my supervisor’s openness to my ideas and her encouragement to ask questions. Her constructive feedback on each project was important in helping me grow and refine my skills.
Now that your experience is coming to an end, what impact did it have on your career journey?
This internship had a significant impact on both my professional and personal growth.
