How did you get your internship?
I found my internship through actively researching online and applying to different places on Handshake, the university’s online job and internship hub. This was not the easiest for me to do because I was doubting my ability to secure an internship. I had already experienced applying to several jobs and would not always hear back from companies. This began to stress me out as the end of the semester was approaching, and I had not received confirmation for a summer internship. Fortunately, I heard from Thunderhead Mountain Resort and had to go through four interviews before being hired for their Attendant and Hospitality position. After receiving the news that Thunderhead hired me, I felt a huge sense of relief because I was not only able to get my internship requirement approved but I would also be receiving a salary.
Why did you choose this internship?
I chose this internship because working in the hospitality industry in a mountain town seemed very appealing. During my interview process, I learned more about the position and my day-to-day responsibilities. I became more interested and excited about the job and thought it would align well with my major. I also felt relieved receiving an internship as the spring semester was coming to a close and I knew I wanted a summer internship experience. Once this internship was approved, I was excited and looking forward to my time in Steamboat.
How was the internship related to your Applied Humanities degree?
My internship was related to my Applied Humanities degree because I have developed skills such as communication, problem-solving, and collaboration. These are the same skills I have practiced in class discussions and group projects. This allowed me to further develop my knowledge and apply them in a work environment.
What did you find challenging about your internship?
An area I found to be most challenging about my internship was, at times, we would be understaffed during our peak hours. This was difficult and stressful because it would create a lot more work for me to do in a shorter span of time. I often had to move quickly from one task to the other while accommodating customers with whatever they needed. I improved my ability to multi-task, adapt, and work more efficiently. I learned to prepare effectively for the days we were short staffed by entering the workplace with a positive attitude, knowing that I could handle any strenuous challenge I encountered.
What was your favorite part of your internship?
The most satisfying part of my internship was participating in an event called Sunset Happy Hour. It is an event that occurs twice a week that attracts many people. Live bands are performing, people are socializing, and everyone seems to be having a fun evening. Although these work evenings for me are extremely busy and demanding, this gives me an opportunity to see new faces and help our guests as well as staff. This makes me feel good because our bartenders, for example, are incredibly busy during this time so being able to assist them is something they greatly appreciate.
How has your internship experience influenced your plans?
My internship experience has influenced my plans by understanding the work environment I would like to be in after college. I have really enjoyed working with a team and developing skills such as communication, critical thinking, multi-tasking, and learning the importance of professionalism. After completing this internship, I am able to better analyze situations, prioritize tasks, and discuss shared goals. This internship has been rewarding and I have gained more confidence and am encouraged to find successful employment after graduation.
What advice do you have for other students as they search for their internship?
My advice for students searching for an internship is to go into it with an open mind and a positive attitude. It might seem intimidating and feel a little daunting searching for internships, but know that with perseverance you will accomplish your goals. If you don’t always hear back right away or get rejected from a company, do not become discouraged. Remember that not every company is going to hire you and that being rejected is part of the process. For example, a company might have a sudden hiring freeze or are in search of someone with more advanced qualifications. If you continue to put yourself out there and keep pursuing opportunities, you will achieve your goals.
