Delia Gonzalez Gomez’s internship with current employer, Amazon, provided her with valuable knowledge and experience for the next step in her career.
What kind of work did you do throughout your internship experience?
As an Amazon Area Manager Intern, I led teams to meet production goals, solved operational issues, and analyzed data for improvements. I learned about process optimization, safety, and quality standards. Effective communication with associates and leaders was key. I also contributed to projects aimed at enhancing warehouse efficiency, gaining a comprehensive view of the role in a fast-paced setting.
What new skills did you practice, learn, or develop in this internship?
During my Amazon Area Manager internship, I gained practical knowledge of their fulfillment operations and core leadership principles. I actively practiced essential transferable skills such as team leadership, clear communication, analytical problem-solving, and data-driven decision- making within a dynamic warehouse setting. This experience significantly enhanced my adaptability, organizational abilities, and capacity to thrive in a fast-paced environment. I also developed a stronger understanding of safety protocols and process improvement methodologies.
How was the internship related to your Applied Humanities degree?
My Applied Humanities degree, with its emphasis on understanding human behavior, communication, and cultural contexts, directly informed my approach as an Area Manager Intern at Amazon. Interacting with diverse teams required strong interpersonal and communication skills, honed through my humanities coursework. Analyzing team dynamics and addressing challenges drew upon my critical thinking and problem-solving abilities developed in the program. Furthermore, understanding the human element within operational processes allowed me to lead more effectively and contribute to a positive work environment.
What did you find most challenging about your internship?
One challenge I faced during my internship was balancing my responsibilities as a Process Assistant while learning the Area Manager role. This meant handling more tasks that all needed completion within my shift. From this, I learned that planning ahead is crucial for managing and finishing all necessary tasks effectively.
How has your internship experience influenced your plans for your future?
My internship experience influenced my future by providing training for advancement within the company. When I decide to apply for a higher role, I will be confident in taking it because I will be experienced and prepared to succeed.
What advice do you have for other students as they search for their internship?
My advice is: don't get frustrated if you don't hear back from the first places you apply to. Keep trying; eventually, you will get that call. Also, contact The PAH Internship Team as soon as possible because they are very knowledgeable and will guide you on your path. Start your internship search early, don't wait until the last semester, and be open to different options.
