Emma Stephenson gained experience in inventory management, market buying, and creative display design while interning at a boutique dedicated to offering carefully selected apparel and accessories.
How did you get your internship?
My internship came about because a hair salon in my hometown was looking to grow the boutique side of their business. I had previously worked at the salon in high school before it expanded into a full-functioning boutique. I reached out to the owner telling her I was looking for a summer internship and she offered to have me as an intern, working behind the scenes to help the boutique continue its growth. I collaborated with the owner on vendor orders, planned summer product drops, and assisted with merchandising strategies.
Why did you choose this internship?
I chose this internship because I wanted to gain firsthand experience in the operations of a small business. Working for a boutique allowed me to see a more personal, hands-on side of the fashion industry that large corporate opportunities often lack. I was able to learn directly from the owner, gaining insight into both creative and logistical decision-making. This setting provided the unique opportunity to take on a variety of responsibilities and make meaningful contributions.
What kind of work did you do throughout your internship experience?
Throughout my internship I managed inventory, designed in-store displays based on new product arrivals, and organized incoming orders from multiple vendors. I attended two major buying markets, the California Market Center (CMC) and the Cooper Design Space, where I explored showrooms, reviewed upcoming collections, and helped place orders. These experiences gave me exposure to industry trends and the process of curating seasonal collections. Overall, my work strengthened both my creative eye and my organizational skills.
What was your favorite part of your internship?
My favorite part of the internship was collaborating with the owner and other business partners on curating the boutique’s seasonal collections. Being asked for my input on product selections made me feel valued and trusted as part of the decision-making process. I enjoyed helping the boutique “tell a story” through the pieces we chose and how they were merchandised. This was meaningful because it showed me that my perspective could directly influence the customer experience.
What advice do you have for other students considering roles at smaller organizations?
My advice to other students is to remain open-minded about the types of internships they pursue. I initially thought I would land a more traditional corporate internship, but working for a small business offered valuable insights I wouldn’t have gained elsewhere. The close connection to customers and the flexibility to try new ideas were experiences I found especially rewarding. Large brands may have more resources, but smaller settings often provide greater opportunities for hands-on learning.
How has your internship experience influenced your plans for your future?
This internship reaffirmed that I want to pursue a career in fashion merchandising and buying. I discovered how much I enjoy the behind-the-scenes process of selecting, purchasing, and styling collections. The combination of creativity and strategy involved in these roles is something I am deeply passionate about. This experience has motivated me to continue building my skills and to seek future opportunities in both small business and larger fashion environments.
