George Orfanos’ Alliant Insurance Services gave him an in-depth understanding of the commercial insurance sector, with a focus on the healthcare industry. The experience helped build his skills in client management, policy analysis, and professional communication.
What kind of work did you do throughout your internship experience?
I had the opportunity to engage in a wide range of activities in the commercial insurance world. Early on, I traveled to Chicago to attend a large-scale underwriting meeting, which gave me a direct look into how my team assesses risk and negotiates premiums for major client renewals. I spent a lot of my time working on important documents like Schedules of Insurance (SOIs) and Schedules of Value (SOVs). These documents are a core part of a client's coverage, and my role was to make sure they were accurate and up to date. I even had a big project at the end of my internship where I was responsible for updating the SOIs for over 20 different properties for a client. Additionally, I contributed to business development by researching new prospects, and my supervisor actually used the information I found and entered it into the company's Salesforce system.
What new knowledge and skills did you learn and develop in this internship?
This internship was a huge opportunity for me to develop both industry-specific and transferable skills. I learned a lot about the commercial insurance process, from policy underwriting to risk assessment, and insurance jargon which is knowledge I can apply to a future career in this field. On a more general level, my attention to detail improved dramatically. Working on documents like SOIs and SOVs, where a single mistake can have a major impact, really trained me to be meticulous and precise. My communication skills were also sharpened, not just through internal meetings with my team, but through a direct one-on-one call with a client, which was a great learning experience. I also learned the importance of professionalism and time management, especially when dealing with the challenges of business travel.
What was the most satisfying part of your internship?
The most satisfying part of my internship was when I was given the responsibility to update the Schedules of Insurance for a client’s properties during my last week. This was a significant task that involved updating over 20 different documents and various liability sections. It was meaningful to me because it proved that my supervisor trusted my abilities and recognized the skills I gained. The fact that I was able to complete the task without any issues was a huge confidence boost. It showed me that the time I had spent learning the product and focusing on attention to detail had truly paid off. It felt great to know that I was able to make a direct and meaningful contribution during my time with the company.
What did you find challenging about your internship?
The most challenging part of my internship was dealing with the logistics of my first business trip to Chicago. My flight was delayed, which meant I got very little sleep and ended up getting sick the following week. This was a frustrating and exhausting experience. However, it was a great lesson in managing my time and travel logistics better. I learned that you have to be prepared for the unexpected when traveling for work. It also taught me the importance of prioritizing personal well being, even when facing professional demands. The experience was a personal adjustment, but it taught me valuable lessons about resilience, self-care, and the reality that professional life isn't always smooth sailing.
How has your internship experience influenced your plans for your future?
This internship has had a significant impact on my future plans. Before this experience, I was interested in the insurance industry, but this internship solidified my desire to pursue a career in this field. I have gained a much clearer understanding of what a career in commercial insurance looks like, from client relations to policy analysis. It has shown me that this is a dynamic field where I can continue to learn and grow, and that the work is always changing. It also showed me the importance of building strong professional relationships. Moving forward, I am even more committed to applying the lessons I've learned, particularly the focus on attention to detail, proactive communication, and continuous learning. I'm now actively looking for roles that will allow me to continue to develop these skills and contribute to a professional team.
What advice do you have for other students as they search for and begin their internship?
My biggest piece of advice is to be proactive and take great notes. First, my internship came from reaching out to many of the top insurance brokers, which shows that you have to be willing to take initiative to find a good opportunity. Second, my site supervisor gave me a fantastic piece of advice that I'd pass on to any student: take notes on everything. When your supervisor or a colleague explains something to you, write it down step by step. You simply cannot remember all the information you are given, especially in a new role. Taking notes shows your boss that you are serious and helps you learn what they want the first time so you don't have to ask the same questions twice. It will not only help you succeed in your work but also demonstrate your professionalism and commitment.
What has been the impact of your internship experience?
The impact of my internship has been both professional and personal. Professionally, I have gained a comprehensive understanding of the commercial insurance sector, sharpened essential skills like attention to detail and communication, and made direct contributions to a leading firm. On a personal level, the experience has been incredibly impactful in boosting my confidence. Being trusted with significant tasks, like updating the SOIs for a major client, made me feel valued and capable. This experience has not just given me new skills; it has given me a stronger sense of my own professional identity and the kind of person I want to be in my career.
