Jacqueline Vale interned at MegaPlanIT and gained experience in logistics, problem-solving,
and sales-strategy skills.
Why did you choose this internship?
I chose to do my internship with MegaPlanIT because I was interested in the technological industry. I have always found technology fascinating and wanted to learn more about what the actual work in that industry looks like day-to-day. Cyber security was an industry that allowed me to understand more about a fast-evolving field of technology, especially with the emergence of AI. I also learned more about the risks that come with advancements in technology and how it can impact human activity with technology.
What is unique about your situation that influenced your internship selection or experience?
A unique aspect of my internship was that my major does not necessarily correlate directly with the industry. Prior to my internship, I had no previous experience in cyber security and my academic background didn’t match most of my colleagues. I learned most about my industry and job by working in it and had to start from scratch. This required me to put extra hours outside of work to fully understand the work I was doing.
What was your favorite part of your internship?
My favorite part of this internship was getting to know my colleagues and why or how they ended up in their jobs today. This was my favorite part because it allowed me to bond with them and feel more at ease in the workplace. It also assured me that everyone has their own path to take in their careers and that you will always end up where you are meant to be. It was inspiring to hear each of their stories and what made them passionate and driven in their job.
What did you find challenging about your internship?
At first, I found it most challenging to break out of my comfort zone. I originally felt that I did not have anything in common with my coworkers, and I was worried about being perceived as a young, unqualified intern. However, throughout the internship, I continued to persist and make an effort to stay optimistic. I ate lunch with my coworkers and attempted to make friends. I also went out of my way to learn more about the industry on my own so that I could contribute to conversations and not rely on only my mentor to teach me things. I learned to be more resourceful and that keeping a healthy mindset will change everything for the better.
What is the impact of your internship experience?
I had an overall positive experience with my internship. I plan on returning to this specific internship this following semester and summer and continuing to grow. It especially has reinforced what I want to do in the future and how to plan my life and academics accordingly. I’m especially grateful that I’ve had this experience so that I have more of a reference when looking for future opportunities after college.
What advice do you have for other students as they search for and/or begin their internship?
My advice to other students beginning their internship is that they should keep an optimistic mindset. Although it can be easy to get overwhelmed when juggling school, work, and a social life, it is important to prioritize your mental health at all times. Especially for those finishing an internship on-site, my best advice would be to meet and talk to those around you. You never know who will be your next mentor or friend that will make your job more enjoyable.
How has your internship experience influenced your plans for your future?
My internship experience has helped me solidify the industry I would like to work in. After learning sales strategies and management skills, I’ve learned aspects about myself that inform what kind of work environment I thrive in. It was beneficial to learn how the corporate world functions and how I’d fit myself into it. This experience has helped me begin formulating my future career and allowed me to reflect on the jobs I would enjoy.
