McKenna Murphy interned with Michele Marie PR and gained experience in fashion-focused public relations.

How did you get your internship?

I got my internship after sharing with a close friend of mine that I was in search of a summer opportunity. After she connected with me with a lead, I reached out to the company and applied for a position. I was excited that after going through two interviews, I got the job!

I chose this internship because growing up I have always been very interested in fashion, but never really knew what I wanted to do with it. I took this specific opportunity because I felt that it would teach me more about public relations and how that work is done in the fashion world. I also did a ton of research on the company when I was in the interview stage and noticed that it was in Brentwood (Los Angeles) and that is where I want to be after college so I thought it would be a fun learning experience.

What new knowledge and skills did you develop in this internship?

I developed a ton of new skills that I did not have before coming into this internship. For example, I became familiar with using Excel and some fashion industry tech tools, including Mayvien and Speedship. I also learned how to do social media scans of fashion influencers. On one of my first days, my supervisor told me to get started on the social media scan. I had never done this before and had to ask some of the other interns for help. This is now my advice to interns: never hesitate to ask questions! While the daily social media scans were very time consuming and hard at first, after some practice I got the hang of it.

My internship experience influenced my plans for the future in so many ways, and all the questions I asked gave me a better understanding of what exactly I want to do when I graduate with my degree. For example, a person at my internship was a personal shopper for Halsey (the singer-songwriter) and that work is so interesting and fun to me. That is something I would be interested in doing in my early 20s and then doing public relations work later in life.
