How did you find your internship and why did you choose it?
I was able to get my internship through a family friend. I reached out to several members of my network during my internship search and ultimately ended up getting this opportunity. It was an extensive search that lasted almost a year and even occurred across multiple cities.
I chose this internship because of the focus and respect my supervisors had for interns and my interest in HR. Even before the internship started, both supervisors genuinely took the time to get to know me, my interests, and what I wanted to learn. I also was interested in learning more about employment law since the summer prior I focused on personal injury law. It is a small team that took the time to learn about me and that drew me to take the opportunity.
What type of knowledge and experience did you gain?
During my internship experience, I have been able to gain knowledge in various different areas. Since starting the internship, I have written contracts, policies, and practiced strategic planning. Additionally, I have explored HR scenarios, employee relations, and talent acquisition. I have also practiced my interview skills, and learned about leadership strategy.
I gained hands-on experience in HR analytics, employee relations, strategic planning, and employment law. The work improved my confidence in handling sensitive information and making thoughtful, ethical decisions. Overall, the experience prepared me for future roles in HR, consulting, or public service.
What was your favorite part of the internship?
My favorite part of the internship was practicing assessing situations as an HR manager. I felt really comfortable and excited to innovate and tailor solutions for different scenarios that managers face. I was able to look at the situations from different perspectives, which I think also made it my favorite. I just really enjoyed the balance of being able to turn on my leadership skills and learn from professionals.
How did your Applied Humanities coursework prepare you for this experience?
I would say that my Applied Humanities coursework helped me in many different ways during this internship. First, I utilized perspective-taking in my work and understood how one situation could be solved in various ways and how differently it can be perceived by others. Secondly, I think that the communication skills I’ve gained helped me in critical aspects like relaying sensitive information, active listening, and writing clearly and professionally. Lastly, the PAH emphasis on ethics and respect for others helped me in understanding due process, transparency, and fairness.
What impact did this experience have on your future career planning and what advice do you have for others as they form their own plans?
This internship solidified my desire to pursue a career in HR. It showed me how meaningful people-focused and policy-driven work can be in real organizations. My advice to other students is to stay open to learning and ask questions often. Take initiative early and use the experience to explore what kind of work truly fits you.
